Daft Punk on the cheap

Amazonmp3 – pioneer of variable music pricing – is taking the process to an extreme via their MP3 Daily Deal. I’m not sure if it’s for a limited time or not, but should you want/need Daft Punk’s Musique Vol. 1 (and if you don’t have it, you do need it), you can get it for…wait for it…$2.99.

There are some interesting implications here: Does this further devalue music (is that possible)? How are mechanicals being paid (assuming a controlled composition clause and a rate set in 06, the payment would be a minimum of $.65 per record – assuming Amazon has any margin, and they may not, there’s just not a lot of room here)? You get the gist.

It’ll be interesting to see how this little experiment goes.

(And, yes, I’m aware that I’ve not uttered the name of the band that is really the “Deal.” If I were to have mentioned this band, I do believe we would have ourselves an oxymoronic situation).
